Evaluate and refine your Cross-cultural skills

Thursday, November 22, 2018
12 to 2 p.m.
Hurley’s Irish Pub
1225 Rue Crescent
Montréal, QC H3G 2B1 (Directions / map)
What you will learn:
- Business success in an increasingly globalized environment demands better cross-cultural skills.
- Well intentioned and seasoned professionals fail when they underestimate (or choose to ignore) cultural differences.
- These differences affect what a person means when they deliver a communication and also how they interpret your communications.
- These skills are vital whether your business involves training, selling, managing, persuading or counseling.
- This is vital to working with people from another culture abroad, by virtual communications or in multicultural teams right here.
- You will have the chance to do your own “cross cultural awareness” quiz and see your score.
- An interesting case study for group discussion will also highlight the learning points.
Peter Loorits was born in Stockholm, Sweden and has a BA (Economics) and an MBA (International Business and Marketing) obtained at York University in Toronto and Université Laval. He worked as a Vice President in the corporate investment industry in Canada and the United States before starting an executive training company which later became Dragonbridge.
Dragonbridge provides cross-cultural training and preparation for their clients’ executives and staff in Canada. It’s not just about protocol and correct behavior in a foreign culture but a complete understanding of your own cultural style and how to interpret the behavior and communications of others. When you understand how other people feel and think, you increase your effectiveness in persuading, managing and advising. We also teach body language, dining etiquette, presentation and communication skills.
Dragonbridge has fulfilled mandates in China, Canada, Europe, the United States and Singapore.

Dr. Irena O’Brien, PhD – The New Neuroscience of Emotion
Monday, March 12, 2018
12 to 2 p.m.
Hurley’s Irish Pub
1225 Rue Crescent
Montréal, QC H3G 2B1 (Directions / map)
The new “Theory of Constructed Emotion” has turned what we know about emotion on its head. There are no universal emotions, rather emotions vary from culture to culture. They are not triggered, but created. They emerge as a combination of the physical properties of our bodies, a flexible brain that wires itself to whatever environment it develops in, and our culture and upbringing which provide that environment. Emotions emerge from predictions made by the brain to give our sensations meaning. This will have a profound effect on how we coach. My talk will summarize the Theory of Constructed Emotion and look at what it means for our social reality and emotional mastery.
Dr. Irena O’Brien, PhD, is a cognitive neuroscientist and has been studying psychology and neuroscience for over 20 years. After working as a chartered accoutrant for fifteen years, she went back to university and obtained her PhD in Psychology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While there, she conducted Brain Imaging and electrophysiological studies and went on to do a postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Language, Mind and Brain at McGill Université. Dr. O’Brien is the founder and director of The Neuroscience School, a neuroscience training and information programme for coaches and health and wellness professionals, where she un-complicates neuroscience and teaches practical evidence-based tools and strategies her students can use in their practice.

It is no secret that body language has a significant impact on effective leadership, communication, and team interactions. In this interactive presentation Kate Bligh will explore how choices in body language and speech can affect our overall quality of communication, functionality, and comfort levels both within the workplace hierarchy, and in our own personal lives. Using demonstrations and role-playing exercises, Kate will demonstrate how much more effective we can all be when we exercise conscious control over our own social status behavior. This session will be ‘part two’, following a previous session given in September 2016, but don’t worry if you didn’t attend that one, as all will be explained!

Seven Learning Trends:
Changing Business As Usual
In her presentation Nathalie will show us how to discover seven learning trends that increase attention and retention. You’ll have to come to the workshop to see what they are – it’s not likely what you think!
For the last 20 years presenter Nathalie Doré has attended workshops around the world and continued to hear the same concepts being taught, just reworked. Rather than just reinventing them herself… they are important learning trends… she started refining and moving them from the esoteric to mainstream.
As a trainer, you need to NOT only know about these seven trends, but how to integrate them into your practice, to set your training apart.
Learn how to capture learners’ attention and increase their retention!
Plan now to attend this important teaching session to learn from Nathalie and other participants.
But you have to come in person… this PowerPoint content cannot be transmitted following the session.
Nathalie Doré, PCC, CTDP, M.Ed., CHRP, CEC and certified NLP Coach has been working with organizations for more than 20 years to develop programs that seek to improve organizational effectiveness, employees’ performance and engagement at all levels.
She’s built the Organizational Learning and Effectiveness functions for Multimicro, Benjamin Moore and Ivanhoe Cambridge from the ground up: defining and implementing strategy, designing processes, building systems and engaging managers as partners in deriving business value from learning.
As a Learning Strategist for Innovation Consultants, Nathalie now shares her experience and passion for designing learning strategies that deliver results for her clients.
Nathalie is an executive coach for Papillon MDC and has her own life coaching practice. She also teaches a 13-week programme at McGill on Developing Human Resources as part of the Graduate Diploma in Human Resources.
